I was thinking about datascience lately. The problem is that I don’t know much about datascience. I learned about data bases in school and worked with them some in industry but that was mostly about how they work internally. But I never did much of anything with real work data applications.
But coming back to data. I recently watched a TEDx talk by Emmanuel Schanzer titled Four Ingredients for K-12 DataScience. In any case, it is clear that Bootstrap DataScience takes things I used to think about to a whole new level. More and more I see programming as a learning tool as well.
One such proposal is to bring datascience into high school math curriculum while deemphasizing more-traditional math pathways. So it’s hoping as much as possible to stay out of the latest “ math wars ,” a set of debates about whether math instruction needs to be reformed to close achievement gaps.
In its current form, school algebra serves as a gatekeeper to higher-level mathematics. Researchers and policy makers have pushed to open that gate—providing more students access to algebra, focusing in particular on those students historically denied access to higher-level mathematics. Let’s Not Be So Quick to Give Up on Algebra.
