The Role of Mathematics in Education: What Professions You Can Get in the Future Have you ever found yourself pondering the real-world applications of those algebraic formulas or geometric theorems you spent hours trying to decipher in school? There you can get advice and solve various mathematical problems in college.
I was thinking about datascience lately. The problem is that I don’t know much about datascience. I learned about data bases in school and worked with them some in industry but that was mostly about how they work internally. But I never did much of anything with real work data applications. I think so.
In its current form, school algebra serves as a gatekeeper to higher-level mathematics. Researchers and policy makers have pushed to open that gate—providing more students access to algebra, focusing in particular on those students historically denied access to higher-level mathematics. Let’s Not Be So Quick to Give Up on Algebra.
And one area where ChatGPT—like humans—often tends to struggle is math. It turns out, though, that it’s wrong, as Wolfram|Alpha can tell us: And, yes, doing math homework with ChatGPT (without it being able to consult Wolfram|Alpha) is probably a bad idea. It’s an interesting, essay-style response.
While the science aspect (chemistry, biology, and physics) and mathematics (calculus and algebra) is a breeze to figure out, the engineering and technology aspects are less straightforward. Mathematics and science are particularly crucial in STEM learning because engineering and technology are dependent on them.
Here are some things I’ve re-learned about being a student in a math classroom, of sorts: 1. in algebraic topology from a top-25 research university. Right now I'm using it to work through a datascience program on Codecademy. There’s a discernible physical component to learning. And I have a Ph.D.

During the pandemic, anxieties about math instruction have grown. Fueling them is the most recent results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which showed historical losses in math education. Falling behind in math can have long term consequences, since the subject can function as a gateway into STEM careers.
