Turning a spreadsheet into a games makes that daunting six syllable phrase (dataanalysis) just one syllable–fun. More back-to-school articles: Do Your Children Need Computers for School? Spreadsheets become important as students develop the need to analyze, compare and contrast, and find evidence to support conclusions.
For example, when teaching spreadsheets, make the software or online tools a vehicle for practicing critical thinking, dataanalysis, and evidence-based learning, not for learning one brand of software or a particular spreadsheet tool. They aren’t used only in the computer lab, but in every class students take.
In them, an animated avatar made to look like the 19th-century computing pioneer Ada Lovelace taught the basics of the Python programming language. The PreK-8 school, Paragon Prep, offered a series of optional, self-paced, video lessons that were automatically generated from a textbook.
This project was guided by Anni Kumar, a seasoned educator and head of the computer science department at Vikas Bharati Public School. After identifying a relevant problem, students collected data to train their AI models and analyzed the data using different tools like Excel, Google Sheets or other dataanalysis software.
Soon, if not already, those updated and repaired computing devices will be returned to students for the new academic year. This computing device return-and-repair ritual looks different from the end-of-year textbook and library book return that was a staple of decades past. But it’s increasingly common.
