I suppose it was inevitable. In the beginning, CSTA only had a free membership. The organization was originally funded by outside sponsors. ACM put up some money and corporate donors put up the rest. This was probably never really sustainable. After a few years, the CSTA Board, I was a board member at the time, started talking about paid memberships.
