Summer can be a challenging time not just for parents but kids. They are accustomed to cerebral challenges that keep them motivated and summer arrives with its sports, naps, and vacations. If your kids miss the thrill of problem-solving or if you worry about them sliding backward without the mental exercise that is integral to school, ORIGO has come up with seven fun math activities that use a blend of popular math apps and everyday activities (like cooking) to fill the summer break with the exc
In refreshing the design of my 10th grade Physics course, one thing I have been attempting to do is find new ways to replace worksheets or problem sets with different sorts of activities, especially ones that promote more group work and discourse within groups. (See kinematics card sort , momentum card sort.). For my Balanced Forces unit, I replaced the Newton’s 1st Law problem solving with a set of lab stations.
Read more about our updated Web and Mobile Game Design Curriculum for the 22-23 school year. One of the first exposures that kids have to computers, coding and technology is in video games. It ranges from educational app games on the iPad to watching Grandma and Grandpa play solitaire on the computer. As a result, interest in becoming a game developer or designer is on the rise.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
As STEM educators and supporters of STEM schools, you work with the inventors of the future — your students. What do you tell a student who has drawn up plans for a promising innovation? What’s the next step? How did the great U.S. inventors grapple with the triumphs and failures of innovating and still persevere? Being innovative can spark many questions, and the U.S.
Hopster is a free new iOS app for kids learning the basics of programming/coding. Hopster is a fun game designed for young kids that have them guiding animals around to complete tasks (i.e. guide a penguin to it's home). This is done by selecting different commands and learning/solving puzzles through computational thinking. As a student progress further in the game they can advance to command line mode which is even closer to "real" coding.

It’s becoming more common to take online classes or blend traditional with online learning. Ila Mishra, a specialist in both LMS and virtual classrooms, has this informative explanation of how teachers can increase their social learning while teaching online classes: Social Learning is defined as learning through observing behavior, attitudes, and outcomes of those behaviors.
When you enter Dr. Lou Lahana's Tech Cafe at PS/MS 188, you aren't entering a classroom with a teacher preparing students for the future. Instead, you enter a space where social activists are working hard doing the real work of making the world a better place today addressing causes about which they are passionate. Lahana is a self-described passionate educator in search of technology to support talent development and social action in teens.
In my Physics 10 update/upgrades, I built a new paradigm investigation for the Constant Acceleration Particle Model. The activity described here gets at the same things as my older activity , but it allows groups to do the investigation rather than the entire class together, and it gives more structure and space to the discussion. The students do more of the talking (and more of the students do talk) in this version, too.

Over fifty years ago, the “Junior Science and Humanities Symposium” (JSHS) held its first national competition, sponsored by the U.S. Army. The Navy and Air Force quickly joined the team, making JSHS the premier high school STEM symposium sponsored by the Department of Defense. Now, Battelle and the Tri-Service partnership is looking for an experienced manager to lead one of the nation’s premier STEM research competitions.

While Internet Explorer has joined the " product graveyard, " Microsoft Edge has entered the scene as more than the standard web browser. Innovative Educators will appreciate the learning tools and extensions proven to improve reading comprehension, strengthen writing, level the playing field for struggling learners and help teachers personalize learning in less time.
After the success of my balanced forces problem-set-replacing mini lab practicum stations , I wanted to design a similar activity for my unbalanced forces unit. One might think that this would be more challenging (or even impossible) to do since these stations need to involve objects with changing velocities (so the handy flip-up index cards wouldn’t work for checking answers).
It’s true what they say that every child starts out as a scientist. Every rock you find them chewing on, glass of water they knock over or time spent sorting Skittles by color is really a mini science experiment where they learn physics, biology, addition and subtraction. Bringing your child’s natural inclinations together with a thoughtful lesson as a parent and home school provider is fun and almost effortless at first.

When I started teaching a decade ago, Type to Learn was the MS Word of typing programs–everyone used it. The game-based keyboarding program was fun, engaging, and actually worked. Students graduated from the thirty-forty lessons (that took about a year to get through) with the skills they needed to become fast and accurate typists who could use the keyboard as an effective tool in both classwork and homework.

In connection with the AAPT summer meeting , the AAPT HS Physics Teacher Camp will be held on Sunday July 29th at the American Center for Physics near Washington, DC. The cost is $25 for the day and includes food. You don’t need to be a current member of AAPT or attend any other part of the summer meeting (though we encourage you to look into both—especially the HS Physics Teacher Day on Monday if you’ve never been to an AAPT meeting before).
US DOE In today’s reality, anything you bring up or mention about any statement made by any politician or appointee seems to be spun back to some political stance by whoever is quoting said politician or appointee. I am not making a political statement. However, I am trying to spark a conversation about CTE and STEM education. Regardless whether you are Red, Blue, Purple or Grey, I believe that when it comes to education, the mantra must be “do what is right.
You’ve probably read my reviews of Zapzapmath and Zap Zap Kindergarten Math, as well as the constant updates they make to their free (and freemium) app. This gamified math ecosystem is popular with students because it’s fun and teachers because it ties into many national and international standards (like Common Core). Its format is colorful and engaging, music lively, and layout intuitive.

The biggest reason teachers report for NOT liking cloud accounts has nothing to do with money, security, or privacy. It’s that they aren’t reliable. No matter how many redundancies are in place, if a student can’t access their cloud storage for a project they’re working on, if a teacher can’t get to lesson plan resources, or if a student started a project at school and can’t finish it at home, the excitement of learning melts away like ice cream on a hot day.
Summer has a reputation for being nonstop relaxation, never-ending play, and a time when students stay as far from “learning” as they can get. For educators, those long empty weeks result in a phenomenon known as “Summer Slide” — where students start the next academic year behind where they ended the last. “…on average, students’ achievement scores declined over summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning…” ( Brookings ).
As you may already know, Wikispaces is shutting down. For years, they have hosted the additional free resources included for anyone purchasing the SL/AATT K-5 Technology Curriculum. As a result of the shutdown, we are moving that site to this new address: Weekly Resources for the K-5 SL Technology Curriculum. The new site still includes all the weekly videos, vocabulary, and explainers on skills used in the curricula.
