If you don’t have children, you may not have noticed the massive changes going on in the local schoolhouse. Those geeky tech tools that we adults like to avoid are taking over the classroom. Every year, students face new iPads, apps, online grading systems, webtools, digital devices, LMSs, cloud-based homework, digital portfolios, and more. As a teacher for twenty five years (the last fifteen in technology), it has my head spinning.
March 11, 2016 TED Ed is one of our favourite video resources we have been recommending for teachers over the last few years. It features short video explanations (usually less than 5 minutes long).read more.
Planning educational activities that incorporate social-emotional learning has broad benefits. When I first began my career as an educator back in the 90s, I believed the problem with schools was that they were boring and the work was irrelevant. Those are indeed big problems, but what I later realized is we need to do more than make schools relevant and exciting. We must provide environments where students can engage in innovative, real-world experiences they find meaningful.
Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape
The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
I like to use this video in chemistry classes either when learning about the periodic table , or later when beginning reactions. It could really fit in anywhere, even as a good sub plan! These questions follow the video Mysteries of Matter Episode 1: Into Thin Air. For more information about the film visit the website: [link] The video is 1 hour long and is available through the PBS store or your library.
Everybody is smiling, which is good, considering this is a shot from an early morning meeting between Jacob, and his paid internship client the Big Time Grain Company. BTGC is a Midwest regional band who is growing by leaps and bounds. BTGC is now at a point where their fan base is asking for more and more ways to connect and engage. BTGC’s tour schedule is heating up, and they want a way to engage their community 24/7 in a relevant, organic and fun way.

A common and recurring question from parents is how to keep their children safe while using the internet. I haven’t covered this topic in a while, but Ask a Tech Teacher contributor, Sara Stringer, came to the rescue with this great article on How parents can protect their children online : One of the best things about the internet is that it brings the world to you.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I come from a background in Experiential Education (yes, it is a specific professional discipline). I’ve also discussed reflecting on the activities to increase the chances of extracting learning as well as transferable skills and knowledge from the activities which is an integral part of experiential education – see my previous posts, Where is reflection in the learning process?
Teachers must update their practice by removing notetaking from the work their students do. I don't just preach this idea. I practice it. In every class I am responsible for, students are given all teacher notes, slides, videos (with transcript) and materials. When students have the notes, rather than worrying about recording what the teacher says, they can make meaning of what the teacher says.
Mathematics, a subject steeped in abstract concepts, often poses challenges to students, especially those in grades 5-10. But imagine a bridge that transformed this intricate maze into an interactive adventure.
Next Monday and Tuesday, my students will be taking the 2015 Grade 8 Released Science STAAR Test. The data collected from this test will be used to focus my review sessions and decide how I can best help each student be successful. But I feel that this cannot be a task that only I take on.I must give ownership and responsibility of the test to my students.
Kimberly Schor, Online STEM Educator, arranged a mentor meeting with Steve Waddell for two of her students who have been placed in paid internships through CTeL’s Paid Internship Program. Not surprising, there was much laughter and fun as interns Kiara and Landon asked questions, shared ideas and worked through the process they will use to do their intern work with Steve and Kim.
English teachers know the key to writing is rewriting, but getting students to do that has always been a challenge. That is, until I found Turnitin’s Revision Assistant. Revision Assistant makes rewriting easy to understand, self-directed, and believe it or not–more fun. In fact, it uses features from the gamified classroom to encourage students to maximize the strength of their writing ‘signals’ by revising and editing.

The TED Ed video below looks at five areas our brain is changing then asks students a series of questions requiring correct answers that in short explain how the use of the internet in general, and social media in particular can ruin them. Go ahead and take 3.5 minutes to watch the video here. Then hop below the picture and read as I debunk each of the five myths.
Today we’re talking to Dr. Gay Stewart of West Virginia University where she is the founding director of the WVU Center for Excellence in STEM Education (CE-STEM). These students are part of two different classes Tom Parslow teaches for the Business Education & Technical Academy (BETA). (BETA) courses are: From the picture, you can tell everyone is having fun.
Few people can sit down and start writing. Most of us hem and haw as we mentally walk through how to get from introduction to conclusion. It’s called ‘prewriting’ and students are no different. Where they diverge from you and I is they haven’t tested all the available methods for planning a story, constructing non-fiction, or building the evidence-based argument.

"Zoo Wild" is a free game found on Google Play. I love the way it teaches conservation to budding young scientists (ages 3 - 10) and fosters a love of nature and the environment. This project has been a labor of love for Clint Clark and his entire family. Below, Clint describes the game and how its development has impacted his family. - When my son was born, my wife and I desired to be parents that empowered our children, built empathy and encouraged creativity.
When students have access to Google Docs it’s like having a personal tutor by their side as they write. Innovative educators who empower their students to use these tools can support students in strengthening their writing skills even without the support of a teacher. This is important for innovative educators who take seriously, our job to develop independent learners.

I love hearing a parent’s perspective on technology in their classrooms so I reached out to efriend, Joe Peters for his thoughts. Joe’s not only a parent, but a freelance journalist and tech enthusiast, so he knew exactly how to get his ideas across on the printed page. You won’t want to miss this article: Parents are aware that classrooms nowadays are much different than when they went to school a generation ago.

The idea of extreme learners fits so nicely with my ideas of user-generated education. So what follows is an aggregate of ideas, videos, and graphics related to being an extreme learner. Milton Chen has stated, “Extreme learners aren’t so different from everybody else.” I believe that the tenets and characteristics of extreme learners can apply to every learner given the support, time, and skills to do so.
Crossposted at the iZone blog Students and teachers spend their days subjected to policies, guidelines, and mandates that they rarely have any say in. Why is that? If we develop policies, guidelines, programs, even buildings with rather than for students and teachers, the result can be a success for all. That’s what we did when we developed social media guidelines for students at the NYC Department of Education—we incorporated the input of relevant stakeholders.
Surveys of students, teachers, and community members will provide critical information in the process of determining whether changes made to your science education program improve desired outcomes. Many important questions cannot be answered through typical science assessments. While it’s clearly essential that students understand and can do science, do they sincerely believe that someone like themselves could be a scientist?

As a working technology teacher, I get hundreds of questions from parents about their home computers, how to do stuff, how to solve problems. Each Tuesday, I’ll share one of those with you. They’re always brief and always focused. Enjoy! Q: I can’t convince my students to give up their paper and pencil. What’s a great reason that will resonate with them?
