This is a question I get often from teachers: How do I teach my state/national/international curriculum using technology? When I first addressed this issue about fifteen years ago, there weren’t any tools to make this happen. In fact, I ended up writing my own project-based technology curriculum (now in its fifth edition). I wanted a curriculum that scaffolded learning year-to-year, blended into the school academic program, could be re-formed to apply to any academic topic, differentiated

Help! I am running out of time, and I still have the animal kingdom to cover! This happens to me EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR!! I really can't think of any topic in my biology class that I don't enjoy. I am a biology nerd and I love teaching! But there are certain topics that I REALLY love and I spend too much time on them. Cell physiology, biochemistry, cell division, photosynthesis, respiration, genetics, DNA, evolution.
Too often marginalized populations (e.g., some populations of people of color, students from lower economic communities) are approached with a deficit model. Attempts are made to instill in these groups of students the skills to make them successful at the Eurocentric education that dominates most schools in the United States. The deficit model of education sees kids as. lacking in some way. defective. deficient. needing to be fixed. not as good as. needing to develop skills valued by mainstream

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
The one thing all innovative educators need is more time. That’s why I stopped and read this Fast Company article from my Twitter feed: “ Seven Effective Shortcuts To A More Productive Workday.” Rather than reading the whole article, I’ll save you time and share some ways this can be applied to the busy lives of innovative educators. 1. KEEP MEETINGS SHORT Shave time to save time: Consider shaving off ten minutes from staff/team meetings.
100-pound subway-cleaning robots. Prosthetics good enough to skateboard on. Homemade spacecrafts that can reach the stratosphere. That last one was made by sisters Kimberly and Rebecca Yeung, ages 9 and 13. They fashioned a small craft out of a weather balloon and Rebecca’s archery arrow shafts. Before releasing it into the sky, they attached a camera, GPS, and a variety of sensors.

Watch children, youth, and even adults when they are immersed in learning something of interest of them, and you will see often complete engagement and personal joy. When education is done “right”, learners often feel and experience the following in their both formal and informal educational environments: Joy. Engaged. Excited. Wonderment.

Many students and teachers are in districts like Wake County where they are subjected to policies, guidelines, and mandates that they rarely have any say in. It doesn’t have to be that way and in New York City it isn’t. Instead the newly released social media guidelines for students 12 and younger incorporated the participatory design process and were developed with rather than for students and teachers.

This is a question I get often from teachers: Technology is always an extra layer of work in my classroom. How can I blend it into what I already do without taking time I don’t have? When I first addressed this issue fifteen years ago, it was all about replacing traditional classroom tools with one on a computer. For example, book reports were typed on the computer instead of handwritten, or math facts were practiced with a math game instead of flash cards.

For many, it means attending conferences like ISTE and NEA to learn how the heck to integrate technology into their lesson plans.
