Each year, the world produces more than 300 million tons of paper. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency , paper typically found in a school or office environments such as copier paper, computer printouts, and notepads, comprise the largest category. Mitigating the use of paper has long been a goal for schools. Every year, a prodigious number of lesson plans center around dwindling rainforests, the shrinking world forests, and the ever-growing waste associated with paper.

Picture yourself at the end of the school year. You are punch-drunk from having made it through end of course exams, posting final grades, collecting textbooks, and trying to get your classroom packed up for the summer. You are giddy with excitement about the much needed summer break. It's the last day of school and you just want to go home. Every teacher reading this knows this feeling.

Ken Robinson once famously said, “Students are educated in batches, according to age, as if the most important thing they have in common is their date of manufacture.” (Ken Robinson, The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything ). I have the privilege of working with 2nd through 6th graders in my gifted education classes and Kindergarten through 6th grade in my summer STEM and robotics camps.

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Vivek Singh, education professional and contributor to Ask a Tech Teacher, has some interesting ideas on using your native LMS as a social learning platform. He has some great thoughts on breakout rooms, discussion forums, virtual reality, and gamifying lessons. I know you’ll enjoy their thoughts: Earliest forms of learning, dating back to the stone-age, involved storyboarding one’s experiences on rocks.

I have written before about the beginning of the school year, Beginning the School Year: It’s About Connections Not Content. I begin all classes focusing on having the students make connections between each other and with me. I want students to learn about one another in a personal way. I want to learn about my students so my instructional strategies can be more personalized and tailored to their needs and interests.

Many of my most popular articles are about mouse skills. Every year, tens of thousands of teachers visit Ask a Tech Teacher to find resources for teaching students how to use a mouse. No surprise because using a mouse correctly is one of the most important pre-keyboarding skills. Holding it is not intuitive and if learned wrong, becomes a habit that’s difficult to break.

The National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools was established in 1988, “before STEM was STEM,” its leader says. Since that time, the group has been providing a forum for STEM high schools to share best practices and other information. We contacted Todd Mann, the organization’s executive director, for more insight on his group and its upcoming professional conference: Q: Tell us about the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools (NCSSS) and how you serve your members.

Educators hardly need any evidence that games are extremely attractive for school-age children, as their classrooms daily surge with non-stop conversations about the latest video games. The struggle, however, is how to harness the thrill of games to further your academic goals. Like a mid-day shot of espresso, gamification can facilitate increased learning and deeper levels of content retention in K-12 students.

I like to use a timeline project to replace a ‘History of ……” lecture in any course. For many students (and teachers!), going through a long list of dates and discoveries in science is important for perspective but can be laborious. A new school year is a fresh start. For students, that means a different teacher and new classmates. For teachers, it’s another chance to make an impact on the lives of kids, turn them into life-long learners or at least let them experience the joy of learning. Teachers share information about their teaching style and methodology, how they grade, what students can do to thrive, and how parents can connect to classroom activities.
