A Learning Management System (what is often called an LMS) has become foundational to blending technology into education experiences. Without its one-stop curation of class management activities such as attendance, homework, grading, discussions, resources, and more, each with their own separate website, login, and password, technology use in education would be defined by chaos.

9Too many classes, all grade levels, begin the school year with getting down to academic business – starting to cover content, discussing expectations regarding academic requirements, giving tests, and other academic information provided by the teacher to the students in a mostly one-way communication. The human or social element is often disregarded.

Our offices will be closed for most of the working day 08/21. Our town is close enough to the eclipse path that we will be shutting down between 10:30am till 2:30pm CST. The team has varied plans for what they will be doing. Welding googles and viewing glasses are scattered about and stashed in cars. I expect some will drive a little north, or go to local watch parties.

Torrence, whose focus was on creativity, developed the Torrence Incubation Model of Creative Thinking (TIM) model. As emphasized in this video, embedding creativity into the curriculum can and should be a strong component of content area teaching and learning. In other words, educators don’t need to plan to teach creativity as another part of curriculum.

I was painfully bored during my K-12 education. I looked forward to college anticipating that it would be different – more engaging, more interesting, more innovative. I was wrong. My undergraduate education, except for a few bright spots, was just an extension of my K-12 education including more grill and drill with sages on the stages (literally since I went to such a large university); taking notes and taking lots of multiple choice tests.

While we’ve made progress in supporting students with digital literacy, citizenship, and using technology to support teaching and learning, one area where we haven’t kept up is news and media literacy. A Stanford study found that America's middle, high school and college students are shockingly bad deciphering fact from fiction or detecting bias. As a teacher, I spend a lot of time preparing lesson plans. Most don’t survive the first five minutes in front of my students but still I go through this preparatory exercise. Over the decades, I’ve come to realize that the product (a completed lesson plan) is less important than the process of organizing my thoughts, thinking about the needs of the students, searching for the right resources, and figuring out the best way to help students achieve goals.
