Every year, I review a large number of websites, apps, and resources that help educators blend technology into their classrooms. I get lots of feedback from readers sharing their experiences, asking questions, and clicking through to see if a particular tool will serve their needs. But, I often don’t hear how the product worked in the fullness of time.

Authentic learning is learning designed to connect what students are taught in school to real-world issues, problems, and applications; learning experiences should mirror the complexities and ambiguities of real life.

Almost everyone can remember the cozy feeling of being read to, either by parents, babysitters, or teachers. Listening to a book was often what initiated the love of reading. Teachers reading aloud have been part of educational systems for multiple generations. The benefits and effectiveness of reading aloud have been studied for decades and researchers have repeatedly concluded that it is a vital part of children’s’ education.

What recommendations should we be giving parents and youth when it comes to screen time? In past limiting some types of screen time made sense. A time when the American Pediatric Association (AAP) made long-standing screen time limits recommendations. However, those were based on research around passive television viewing and violent video games. Since then the AAP has backtracked.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and that’s particularly true when it comes to online learning specially for K- 12, where a kid relates more to a picture than to a text underneath it. ShowMe is an excellent free mobile (iOS, Android, Chromebook) app for creating beautiful looking screencasts, or "flipping" a lesson/classroom. ShowMe provides an interactive whiteboard to allow educators or students to create lessons, presentations, etc. while recording and narrating their own voiceover. Best of all, a finished product can then be shared online in ShowMe's educational community where other users can find, share, or embed, other screencasts.

Finding co-workers who have your back and that you trust and care about like family can be an exceptional experience. I know that I have been fortunate to have found my tribe through the years. I started off with an excellent example of teamwork when I was a young teacher in 1997. That sense of team continued to grow through most of my career. I think it has a lot to do with the leadership on the team and the leadership from the top.

I am not a fan of worksheets. In fact, I hate most of them. They don’t teach real world skills. How often does someone do worksheets outside of school? How often when they become adults? They also tend to focus on a single content area concept like specific math problems or questions about a particular text. I used to teach face-to-face elementary education classes to pre-service teachers.

When I started teaching, syncing work between school and home was impossible. Completing homework required either printing it and bringing it in as paper or–well, nothing. For a decade, when I thought of desktop publishing, I turned to Microsoft Publisher. I loved its flexibility, adaptability, and ease of use both for classroom projects and home. But then I moved on to other alternatives, like Lucid Press that were more flexible and affordable for educational purposes. Really, I didn’t see a lot of other alternatives until Sara Stringer, from the Ask a Tech Teacher, came up with this great article about desktop publishing options.
