In Learning in the Making I discuss the importance of and strategies for integrating technology into the curriculum. Maker education needs to be intentional. It follows, then, that if we want to bring maker education into more formal and traditional classrooms—as well as more informal environments such as afterschool and community programs—it needs to be integrated into the curriculum using lesson plans.

I’m a big believer in online web-based curricula that can be accessed from any browser, any digital device, any location. It makes learning organic, part of life rather than something that must happen from a certain book or room. To me, the growing popularity of web-based curricula is no surprise. The problem is trying to blend them effortlessly into a class LMS or learning platform without lots of extra clicks and logins.

Quizlet Live launched several years ago, but it's still one of my favorite games to play with my students. Basically it takes a Quizlet set and turns it into a collaborative game. Once you open the set that you want to use and select the live option a website and code are presented to students. Students are assigned to teams and then they they need to work together to answer the questions.

This site is very user friendly and built around a "wiki-style" interface. This is ideal for districts that are especial worried about maintaining CIPA compliance. Makerdemy is an excellent site for learning how to program/code in different languages such as: Raspberry Pi, Google Assistant, Alexa, and more. This is done through self paced learning where students can select their own level (i.e. advanced) and then take courses at their own pace. Finally, Makerdemy has excellent online support and answers questions w/ detailed timely responses.

Speechling is a excellent free site for learning a language. The way this works is a student listens to a professional voice actor say the word or phrase and then repeats it and records themselves. Then a professional will listen to recording and provide feedback on how the word was spoken to help learn the language. Below is a brief demo.
