I have written before about the beginning of the school year, Beginning the School Year: It’s About Connections Not Content. I begin all classes focusing on having the students make connections between each other and with me. I want students to learn about one another in a personal way. I want to learn about my students so my instructional strategies can be more personalized and tailored to their needs and interests.

With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.
Curriculum-Based Assessment (CBA), often equated with Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM), is any form of assessment that measures progress toward fulfillment of a stated curriculum. More succinctly: “…repeated, direct assessment of targeted skills in basic areas using materials taken directly from the teaching curriculum” While CBA is assessment based on the curriculum, it isn’t chapter tests from a text.

With COVID-19 changing summer plans for students, the California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) Pathways program and YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles teamed up to offer an exciting coding bootcamp to keep students learning and engaged throughout the summer months. Over 40 students in grades 4-8 took part in the free program that taught them about career pathways in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) fields.
What is S. T.E.M. ? According to Live Science.com , " S. T. E. M. is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science , technology , engineering , and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach." People in S. T. E. M. related jobs use their knowledge in those specific areas to solve real-life problems.

Knoword is a super fun Vocabulary game that is perfect for integrated technology into the classroom/home. The way this works is definitions are given w/ the starting letter of the word while a timer counts down. The player tries to answer as many correct words by typing/spelling them correctly before the timer runs out. Best of all, there is a teacher portal where educators can create their own "word" packs to integrate w/ their curriculum as well as track student data.
